The Witness Cantata

June 12, 2013
Swanee and Gloria

Composer Hunt embraces Pastor Gloria Hammond White. Sunday’s performance was in tribute to the wonderful work Pastor Gloria has done in Sudan and Southern Sudan.

On Sunday, June 9, we had the privilege to perform the Witness Cantata, an hour-long work composed by Swanee Hunt that takes the human experience of suffering as it’s focal point. Composer Hunt says she wrote the piece while experiencing her own personal, “dark night of the soul”. During this time she took solace in reading the work of Theodore Roethke, Anna Akhmatova and others. What struck Hunt about the words of these writers was the common thread of hope found in the midst of unimaginable suffering.

This is the subject matter that became the inspiration for the Witness Cantata. On her webpage Hunt describes the cantata as “a reminder that suffering is an inescapable and even rich part of life–not simply to be avoided, but to be integrated into the whole understanding of what it means to be human“.

It was certainly well received by the nearly 500 present at the Bethel AME Church on Sunday. Audience members described the piece as inspired and many in attendance were moved to tears. The entire program which also featured Cry, the beloved country and select spirituals performed by the New England Spiritual Ensemble was a stunning tribute to the human experience.

The Landmarks Orchestra’s free summer concert series, which promises to have equally exciting programming, begins July 17 at the DCR’s Hatch Shell. A complete concert schedule is below. We look forward to seeing you this summer!
